• AND THAT'S A WRAP •
47 Miles completed 💪 but more to the point — I actually enjoyed every single mile.
Not because it was easy — some miles were truly hard work — but because my body finally feels like it's improving.
Iron deficiency is real, a genuine drain on your physical resources. Add nearly 2 years away from home, finding my feet in life again, and it's fair to say it's been a testing time.
But having this challenge to focus on? It was exactly what I needed.
And somewhere out there on those miles, favourite tunes setting the pace and my mind free to roam — I found my inspiration. I've finally plotted the next leg of my life adventure.
So stay tuned… because I think I've uncovered how I can best put my love of the outdoors to good use 😉

Yesterday's run felt good. Really good. And I want to hold onto that feeling — because not every run does.

The past 3 years severe iron deficiency has knocked my running sideways. Staying patient with myself took real mental strength. But with my iron finally improving, I'm feeling the benefits again — and that momentum inspired me to sign up to run 47 miles this February for Surfers Against Sewage 🌊

If you're thinking about getting fit or just starting out — don't give up. Not every run will feel good. But the ones that do make it all worth it.

• I JUST NEEDED TO DEFROST •
Last week I shut down.
Properly. Five days where my body just wouldn’t move, physical and mental immobilisation. This is not something I’ve ever experienced before. I mean total hermit mode!!
●
It gave my head far too much space. Intrusive thoughts rolled in… silly ones really, questioning whether I was still a mountain woman, or was that part of my life was somehow done 😵‍💫
●
But once logic took back over the truth was obvious.
Injury and overload had caught up with me. My body needed rest, not judgement and as I am not one for listening to the recover part of my body very well I think my brain forced me into it.
●
Today, well this week feels very different.
Back out again, on a route that I've had tucked away in the curiosity catalogue, it felt like a good idea and with a new coating of snow the wintery conditions set for the day I figured now is as good a time as any. Thank goodness Awen is always a keen bean for it.
●
Having never done this route before it was a good challenge to prepare, research but mainly trust my skills along the way and put the route from the map to the mountain. Some whiteout summit conditons and questionable wet slippery snow gives me another QMD in the bag 💪
●
This winter just keeps on giving!

This year I want to support a few causes that sit very close to my heart. First up: water.
Oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds — all of it. Because water is life, and life is worth looking after 🌊

I’m a self-confessed eco-warrior and I spend a fair bit of time in Asia, especially Nepal. I absolutely love the country, the people, the energy…
What I don’t love? The rubbish. At all.

So in February I’m committing to running 47 miles to raise money to support efforts that protect water sources and reduce pollution.
Small detail: I’ve barely run for over a year due to illness, so yes — this will be hard. Possibly questionable. Hopefully not fatal 😜

But if I’m going to suffer, I may as well do it for a good cause. Silver linings and all that jazz 😄

Still hunting for new hikes I can squeeze in between school runs and with the sun set to shine all day, it was a no-brainer kind of decision.
♡
Three little peaks dominating the skyline as you drive south along the coast from Caernarfon. A stunning conservation area where you can smell the sea as you climb the mountains and the coast in perfect partnership. Absolute dream combo.

I’ve saved this route (and all my local wanderings) on Komoot — fully public, with tips, timings and notes so you can head out and follow your own version. • CHANGE OF PLANS •
Life as a busy mum means I usually work from a loose weekly plan, juggling work, weather and whatever fits. But sometimes you have to drop it all and answer the call.
Yesterday, blue skies during yoga changed the plan — chores, admin and messages could wait. I had a date with the mountains.
I’m slowly ticking off the Welsh 100, with routes on my Komoot (link in stories). Y Garn on the Nantlle Ridge is a perfect last-minute adventure: short walk-in, a fun wee scramble and just enough exposure to get the heart rate up.
Short, sweet and sunny. Exactly what I needed. ⛰️

Even though the snow has mostly gone, it still feels very wintery. I wanted a fast mountain run today, which usually means fewer layers, but experience told me to be prepared. I took waterproofs for the wind and microspikes for any unexpected ice, and chose a mostly sheltered route.

The ground was soft and soggy, the wind was cold, and everything except the spikes was needed. A thoroughly enjoyable run up and down Moel Hebog—and still plenty of time for school pick-up.
.
I’m well travelled, with many countries that hold a special place in my heart, but there’s something magical about being able to squeeze in a quick mountain day between school runs. Not many places offer that kind of access!

Got to make the most of it while the winter is in! Gyrn Las winter grade I (I+ in today's conditions).

Beta for anyone interested. Snow is soft until about 600m, ice isn't bonded to the rock that well. After 600m the snow was compacting quite well under food and the turf was frozen. NW winds have started building some cornices on the NE ridges and the snow is pretty wet and heavy. Thin layer if wind slab (hard crust) on the NW aspects, slopes heavily loaded. White out conditions above 800m today. Take care out there!

Its not often that winter hits us full pelt here despite being surrounded by mountains but what an intro to 2026! The thickest, deepest, powdery white snow we have seen here for some time and everyone is out playing.
What is it about winter that prompts us to forget everything and just go out and play.
Even though today was an absolute slog fest, and even though I continue to work steadily towards getting my Winter Assessment it didnt feel like a trial, it felt like a gift.
Knowing the masses would be drawn towards the opposite Ridge line I set off up through the quarries to Elidr Fawr.
From valley floor to skyline, my legs are battered from breaking trail most of the day sometimes in waist deep powder but I finish the day aching but satisfied.
A good days wander and a great days decision making!
Thats one for the bag (or log)!

Another blue sky day, the heat was up and the shade was minimal with some steep end of the day climbs up yet more steps (soon to become the common theme).
Namaste is now no-more-steps!
Such a beautiful way to end my 30s though watching the sunset over 3 of the world's highest peaks ontop of Poon Hill!

• RECOVERY OR RETURN? •
Something I’m coming to terms with is that healing isn’t circular—you don’t “come back” to yourself. Each challenge, whether soul or body, moves you forward, teaching something new. It’s a linear journey that evolves as you go.

When something stops you in your tracks, it’s worth listening, taking stock, and learning—so that when you continue on your path, you do so stronger and better equipped.

This most recent blip, enduring a severe iron deficit, has felt longer and more debilitating than any before. That pure will of “push on regardless” wasn’t available, so I had to learn, adapt, and surrender, patiently waiting for the information to process so I could fight back correctly.

I’ve taken accountability for what goes into my body, adjusted my fitness routines to honor how I feel, and ensured every activity benefits both mind and body.

Today was special. I felt more like myself—back in control of my body and my adventures than I have for some time. Proud that I was kind to myself when I needed it most. Motivated to learn more so I can maximize what I can do, and free to simply enjoy the privilege of exploring our mountains alone, with confidence and passion.

Every day is a school day, but today reminded me: I’m not always the student. Sometimes, I am the master.

• RECOVERY OR RETURN? •
Something I’m coming to terms with is that healing isn’t circular—you don’t “come back” to yourself. Each challenge, whether soul or body, moves you forward, teaching something new. It’s a linear journey that evolves as you go.

When something stops you in your tracks, it’s worth listening, taking stock, and learning—so that when you continue on your path, you do so stronger and better equipped.

This most recent blip, enduring a severe iron deficit, has felt longer and more debilitating than any before. That pure will of “push on regardless” wasn’t available, so I had to learn, adapt, and surrender, patiently waiting for the information to process so I could fight back correctly.

I’ve taken accountability for what goes into my body, adjusted my fitness routines to honor how I feel, and ensured every activity benefits both mind and body.

The countdown to 40 is still very much ON!

I started climbing about 17 years ago when I met a group of legends all working towards their outdoor quals. There I was, fresh out of town, tying into a rope for the first time… and instantly fell in love with it.

A few years later, I joined a women’s climbing group and met some incredible ladies — some of whom are still good friends today.

The thing is, I’ve always been someone who wants to try everything. I dip in and out of sports and hobbies, driven by a mix of motivation and inspiration.

These days, I’m always looking for things I can do with Awen — and finally, she’s found her own little passion for climbing too! She's old enough now to understand crag etiquette, sooooo... anyone fancy a climb?

21 reasons why my life is better simply because you exist. So now I get to watch you step fully into your power as a woman. From you, I learned how to be a mum and how to navigate life with an extra human. For a while, it was just you and me. Those early years of fumbling my way through this complicated and ever evolving journey. Hours of giggling and being silly, 2 kids together just playing house.
Then we stumbled our way through those teenage trips, the spiralling and often fuzzy years of not knowing whether either of us could survive it. Yet, as soon as it began, it was over and we still had each other at the end, shaped slightly differently, both carrying the odd scar but still very much together.
Then you became my hero. When life turned me upside down, you stepped up to the table and you became my hero. I watched you literally grow into an incredible, powerful and confident individual and once again, I was learning from you.
Now you hold your own court, away, far far away from this nest and while I miss you as if my very limbs had been removed my heart is full always watching your journey like it's the most interesting documentary I've ever seen. Excited for the next episode, anticipation always is present, wondering how next you will blow my mind.
I'm invested. I'm all in. Forever and always my beautiful, wonderful and inspiring daughter.

• A LOOP OF THE GREY CORRIES •

Yesterday, Awen and I did a big loop on the Grey Corries, including the extra peaks of Stob Coire na Ceannain and Sgurr Choinnich Mor. That’s 4 Munros and 9 mountains in total!

It’s taken time and effort for me to feel comfortable taking Awen on these big loops, but over time, I’ve really come to understand her capabilities and limits. I know when to push her a little beyond those limits, but always with care.

Being physically fit isn’t the only thing that matters on these routes. It’s about planning—what to bring, when to rest, and the mental stamina required. Anyone who has taken on a big challenge knows that your mind often gives up before your body does. This is just as true for kids.

So, what are our tricks for a successful day out?

1. Rest stops of varying lengths – Some days we need quick breaks, other times a longer rest is needed to recharge.

2. Layers – Being able to add or remove layers quickly makes a huge difference.

3. Audiobooks – A good audiobook or podcast can keep us both entertained during certain stretches of the walk.

4. Talking – We talk about where we are, what we can see, and make time to appreciate the views.

5. Hydration – We carry a mix of water, squash, and juice to keep our liquids interesting.

6. Sweets – A little sugar boost always helps.

7. Something to look forward to – Whether it's a special treat, a movie night, or a rest day activity, having something nice planned keeps us both motivated.

It’s all about balancing the journey with the summit and making it enjoyable for both of us!

Once Upon a Time... Women Ruled While Men Roamed

In the days of old in Britain—long before cities, cars, and constant connectivity—tribal life was the norm. Men would often set off to hunt, trade, or explore, leaving behind the true heart of the tribe: the women. It was the women who stayed, managed the land, raised the children, held the stories, made the decisions, and kept the community strong.

Fast forward to now, and it’s curious to see the shift. More and more women are choosing the road over the hearth. Solo travel, single living, building a life of freedom and movement—these are no longer anomalies but conscious choices made by many women today.

So what happened?

Is this a quiet rebellion against centuries of domestication, a reclaiming of what was always ours—autonomy, adventure, authority?

Or did something shift along the way—did men, somewhere in history, decide they ruled and managed better, pushing women out of positions of leadership and decision-making under the guise of “protection” and tradition?

And now, as the world reshapes and roles dissolve, are we rediscovering our original blueprint?

Maybe we aren’t escaping tradition at all. Maybe we’re returning to something older than history books care to remember.

Maybe it is about better or worse—not better in terms of one gender over another, or one way of life above another—but better as in more aligned, more authentic, more true. Because if each of us—regardless of gender—was encouraged to live in a way that honoured our natural strengths, our inner callings, our personal rhythm... wouldn’t the world function better? Wouldn’t we find more balance, more connection, more peace?

Maybe the real revolution isn’t about breaking free, but breaking open—to remember who we really are beneath the roles we’ve inherited.

Awen has always been my little sidekick, my mountain mate. From toddlerhood tucked into a carrier to skipping along trails, she’s been by my side in the hills. But recently, things have started to shift.

These days, our adventures sometimes begin with a groan, a moan, or the occasional full-blown meltdown. It’s got me asking the tough question: When does getting the kids outside turn into dragging them along? When do we reassess?

It’s not always easy. Plans go out the window. Routes get cut short. The pace slows. And sometimes the biggest challenge of the day isn’t the mountain—it’s the mood.

But I haven’t given up. Partly, yes, for selfish reasons—the mountains are where I reset, reconnect, and breathe. But also because I know, left to her own devices, Awen would choose cartoons, colouring, biscuits and hot chocolate every day. And that’s OK... in moderation. Just like hiking, climbing, scrambling, biking, or cold dips in mountain tarns.

Now she’s finding her voice more, and with homeschooling in the mix, we’ve started to build more space into our adventures. Not every day needs a summit. Not every trail needs a mission. We mix it up now—some days are wild and windswept, others are slow and sunny.

It’s not just about me. But it’s also not just about her. For our little tribe, it’s about teamwork. That means we both get a say but sometimes we have to take turns at the win!

Since coming back, it's felt like everything that was gently ticking along in my absence has suddenly thrown up its hands and demanded my full attention. The to-do list is long. The money? Nonexistent. I'm juggling job hunting, homeschooling, solo parenting—and trying to make sense of it all without losing myself in the process.

So I did what I always do when life feels too loud—I headed to the hills.

It’s funny, even that isn’t as simple as it used to be. Which mountains? What route? What’s realistic now with Awen in tow and limited budget to get us moving around? How much can I actually do without overdoing it—for her, or for me?

There’s that old saying, “When in doubt, do nothing.” But I’ve never really subscribed to that. My version is more like, “When in doubt, do something.” Something small, something manageable. Something that reminds me who I am.

So today we didn’t exactly ease in—we smashed out the CMD arete, a stunning three-summit route all the way to the top of the UK. It was a good way to set our pacing here in this terrain, and somehow, we are still flying. I got to see Awen shine and surprise me again with her grit, and I felt like—just maybe—we’re finding our feet after all.

It’s not all figured out. Far from it. But we started. And sometimes that’s enough.

Coming back from a long stretch of adventure is always a bit unsettling. I am a little lost, a little finacially broken, and a lot all over the place.

Strangely, it's when I'm mid-escape, deep into a trek or wandering somewhere far from routine, that I feel most grounded. Untethered, yes—but completely aligned. Right now though, with one chapter closing and the next still unclear, I’m feeling pretty discombobulated.

Lately, I’ve been wondering if freedom is found in the moments that light us up — doing the things that fill us with joy and feed our passions. But then I wonder... when we build our lives around those passions, when they become routine, do they lose some of that spark?

I didn’t work hard and strike gold. I worked hard and downsized my life to fit what I wanted.
We live small. We live cheap. And we often make it up as we go along.

No savings. No investments. No mortgage or pension. Right now, I’m broke — but work will come.
I don’t live by a big master plan either. What’s the point in worrying about what’s next when I’m not even there yet? I can't future problem solved when I don't know what tools I will have at hand at that time.

We spend so much energy picking apart the past or future proofing something that is not in any way guaranteed too us. Maybe the sweet spot is right here — doing what we can, with what we’ve got, right now.

It is quite something as someone whose life is heavily involved with mountains to finally lay eyes on she, that dominates the sky, Chomolungma, Sagarmatha, Everest.

Something that both Awen and I were excited to see and from the Renjo La Pass (our final of 3 passes) has the best view being this might mountain is so heavily encircled by her neighbouring peaks. Minus her snowy cape, naked to the increasingly warm elements, I am easily satisfied with a distant view of her.
⛰️
So many times on this trip I have been asked if I would like to climb her, and it may surprise many to know that no, I do not have a driving ambition to stand atop the world.
Does this make me any less of a mountaineer?
No, I don't think so.

My personal mountivations come from a place of peace, quiet enjoyment of being in a place where few tread. Where I can fully immerse myself in the beauty of nature. My mind, body and soul thrive from the simple act of enjoying what this beautiful planet has to offer.
For me, standing in a queue in the 'death zone' where the majority of humans are not designed to be is not my idea of fun.

I love technical ascents, the puzzle of finding my way to the top of a new friend. Having the time (and oxygen) to stay a while on the top and let me eyes stretch to future potential adventures.

This is not a judgement post. For those who crave the ultimate summit, I wish them all the best, but for me, I am content with something simpler.

The Māori name for Milford Sound, Piopiotahi, means "a single piopio." The piopio was a native New Zealand bird, now extinct. According to Māori legend, the name comes from the story of the legendary hero Māui, who sought to bring immortality to humankind but was killed by the goddess of death, Hine-nui-te-pō. After his death, a piopio is said to have flown to the area in mourning, giving the fjord its name.

And then a Welsh man came along and called it....

Milford Sound was later also named by European settlers after Milford Haven in Wales. John Grono, a Welsh sailor, is credited with giving it the name in the early 19th century, drawing inspiration from his homeland. Despite being called a "sound," it is actually a fjord, formed by glacial activity over thousands of years.

It's interesting how when colonising, we, the british, didn't aim to learn the existing names or the legends behind them but simply renamed it to suit ourselves?

I wonder Wales (UK), how do we feel about this? Particularly in light of recent years' dedication to erasing the English names throughout our Welsh national parks?

History is full of irony, contradiction, and unexpected parallels, isn't it? ✨️

This micro range, nestled between two lakes, offers incredible summits and ridgewalking, but access is restricted to a few weeks early in the year. Permission from multiple land managers is required, as the land is used for farming and hunting throughout the year.andnis considered private land.

The terrain features numerous 4WD tracks crisscrossing the landscape, which can make for hot, dusty walks—especially during a heatwave. Yesterday, the ridge was steady 12–1400m, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to a sweltering 26°C.

We are at the hottest part of the year right now, so early starts, and all the water is needed!

• AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE •

Staying Hydrated on the Trail 💧

Finding water in the wild? What's good to guzzle:

🏞 Flowing Water: Choose clear, fast-moving streams or springs. Avoid stagnant pools.
🌱 Moss as a Filter: Water running through moss is naturally filtered—great for pre-treatment.
⛰️ Try to get as high as you can before you take the water. This keeps you clear of human or animal interference.
❄️ Glacial Runoff: Ice-cold and refreshing, but often carries fine sediment (“rock flour”). Let it settle or filter it before drinking. Bonus: it’s typically free of harmful bacteria due to its icy origins.
🪨 If you find only thin trickles of water over clear rocks, check for no plant life like algea and take small sips, enough to wet the lips but keep looking for a better source.
☃️ Melting snow is an option. You will need plenty of gas and the patience to monitor it. Boil it for at least 7 minutes.
🔥 If you can, do! Boil, filter, or use purification tablets to avoid potential risks.

Stay prepared, drink often, and enjoy nature’s refreshment! And don't rely on the huts to have water ~ always carry enough to keep you hydrated and to cook your meals as a baseline!

Now, having explored quite a lot of the mountains, but by no means anywhere near all! I feel like they have a personality of their own.
The mountains here are like the proud, young adults in their prime to the widened, ancient grandfolk that we wander at home.
Newer, taller and still tenuous in their formation with the threat of big changes in the form of earthquakes and eruptions, the mountains here are in their prime, not ready to settle down yet strong in their conviction.
Is it just me that attributes human characteristics to the mountains? They feel like friends, most of the time, and when I wander amongst them I sense them and feel their story.
Which mountain would you say is your best friend?

What an unforgettable couple of days we’ve had! A chance encounter with a lovely family at the trailhead turned into an unexpected blessing as they offered Awen and me two spare beds in their booking at Brewster’s Hut—no tent carrying required! #Winning

We powered up the trail in no time, soaking in a peaceful afternoon capped by the most breathtaking sunset. The following day began early, with an exhilarating summit of Mount Armstrong (2174m), detouring from the tourist track to the glacier. Awen as always surpassing herself with some incredible and brave steep, scree and scrambling down climbing to the path!

The glacier itself was serene, bathed in sunlight, and yes, we couldn’t resist an icy dip! Standing there amidst such raw beauty is awe-inspiring, especially when you realize that one day, these majestic glaciers will disappear. The profound geological history and the incredible impact glaciers have had on shaping our world leave us in humble amazement.

We wrapped it up with a quad- burning 1900m descent back to the car—hearts full, toes sore, but spirits soaring. Now, with a 6-week adventure on the horizon, we’re in search of the perfect walking shoe sole.

• FEELING ROPEY •

Thanks for all your messages about my adventure yesterday—it seems helmets, ropes, and gear sparked some conversations!

Let me start by saying I’m a huge advocate for safety. I always aim to wear the right kit, and for any scramble of this technicality, a helmet is usually non-negotiable. This adventure, however, was a last-minute plan, and I got to tackle a route I’ve been wanting to do for over a year.

Once I was on the route, I quickly realised a helmet was essential—and for most people, a rope (and the skills to use it) would be too. I was grateful for my @scarpa_uk
Approach shoes and we carried essentials such as first aid, GPS, head torch, sustenance, water/windproof, etc. I also went with someone who is highly familiar and experienced on the route.

No excuses here though — while I had an absolute blast and no regrets, I was within my skill remit. But, let this be your reminder: safety gear isn’t optional and for this route should be essential!

Adventure safely, always. 🌄

Thanks for all your messages about my adventure yesterday—it seems helmets, ropes, and gear sparked some conversations!

Let me start by saying I’m a huge advocate for safety. I always aim to wear the right kit, and for any scramble of this technicality, a helmet is usually non-negotiable. This adventure, however, was a last-minute plan, and I got to tackle a route I’ve been wanting to do for over a year.

Once I was on the route, I quickly realised a helmet was essential—and for most people, a rope (and the skills to use it) would be too. I was grateful for my @scarpa_uk
Approach shoes and we carried essentials such as first aid, GPS, head torch, sustenance, water/windproof, etc. I also went with someone who is highly familiar and experienced on the route.

No excuses here though — while I had an absolute blast and no regrets, I was within my skill remit. But, let this be your reminder: safety gear isn’t optional and for this route should be essential!

I'm bloody back, baby!!! Finally got myself out on the big, rocky ridges I've missed like my right arm has been taken!
Don't get me wrong, I love bimbling with Awen, I love running up and down mountains, but this is where my passion is. Living life on the absolute edge, being so far out of my comfort zone that requires nothing less than hyper focus and the testing of where my skill set currently is!
A year away from scrambling defo showed me that a skill fade is a thing. Confidence requires constant work, and that no amount of time away from it lessens how much i love it.
Yes to the Grand Traverse of the Remarkables Mountains. Double Cone ✔️ Single Cone ✔️ heart full ✔️

• BEACH ~ BED •
It was a nice change to camp on the beach. We even managed to keep our sleeping bags sand free, stay toasty warm and not another soul to be seen on the sand (a few boats bobbing off shore was all!).
I think this is the first time since I was a teenager that I have slept on the beach and it didn't disappoint!

While we love sunny days and climbing mountains under blue skies, there’s something magical about heading out in summer rain.

When a group of friends suggested tackling the Routeburn Track as a one-day event, Awen and I decided to get a head start by staying at the first hut to wait for them.

It turned out to be the perfect choice—the forest cover kept us dry, and the waterfalls were out in force. Every time the clouds parted, the sunlight transformed the landscape into a fairytale wonderland.

The scenery was absolutely stunning, and the power of the rivers was incredible (check out my stories!).

• EXTROVERT ~ INTROVERT •
Different days mean different ways. Last week, I was feeling light, happy, and open to the world and all it has to offer. This week, I'm feeling a little more stay at home, keep to myself and wading through much heavier state of mind.
Nothing is wrong in itself, and that's the thing. It's quite refreshing to just be feeling more introspective without there needing to be some big underlying 'thing' that I need to work through.
I'm simply just a bit down in the dumps - however, this too shall pass. In the meantime, I will read books, indulge in chocolate, and take myself on lots of mini solo adventures until the energy shifts, and I'm back to my chatty, sociable self.
I've learnt a lot this year about being gentle with myself and allowing for moods and emotions to flow through and past me.

• EXTROVERT ~ INTROVERT •

I have been thoroughly enjoying finding the best day hikes with an hour of where I am based and today while I didn't get to the top of a summit the twists and turns, rises and ridges kept opening up view after view.
While I wait for the spring snow to finish melting and swelling the rivers I will stick to the high routes but I'm so keen to get stuck into the maze of valleys and flats that seem to make up much of the mountain areas here in the South.
Got to get my training in for mine and Awens' upcoming summer adventures (not telling yet, but I'm super excited!).
